C1 Corvette Early T10 4 Speed Rebuild and Upgrade
Переглядів 2,7 тис.3 місяці тому
The early General Motors T10 4 speed used in 1957 to 1962 C1 Corvettes and the Chevrolet Bel Air was weak and eventually was replaced by the Muncie 4 speed in late 1963. This conversion installs stronger gears with better ratios while maintaining factory fit and shifters. The car runs a 3.08 axle with a 2.88 1st gear making is an ideal 4 speed with no need to go to a 5speed. HIGH VISCOSITY BODY...

Hurst Shifter Main Body Wear is Often Missed during a rebuild ##hurstshifter #musclecar #hotrod

The Hurst shifter's body bore is often overlooked during a rebuild. If you need to use your original body for restoration purposes you need to check to see if the bore that supports the cross pin is not oblong. A loose cross pin will cause excessive play in the whole shift mechanism. Watch my full videos on Hurst shifter rebuilds

Rebuilding an OEM Ford Torino Super Cobra Jet Hurst shifter using my modified lever studs. These eliminate the rubber grommets that flex and cause shifter alignment issues.
Some hard earned lessons for advice there. Thank you.
Just curious, If you install a oil slinger before the fromt bearing, how does oil get to the bearing?
Thanks!
Great info. Any particular gear oil that you prefer? 80W-90 wt?
Found Mr Freddy on UA-cam called him and setup a time to come down and meet. Just so happened he was going to the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona and I was also Met and purchased a Toploader setup kit for a 66 Mustang 6 Cyl to V8 swap Very knowledgeable and Assisted me (an old Chevy guy) to accomplish this job Very satisfied with the purchase and everything went well with the swap. Do yourself a favor and contact him and save yourself some heartache
I am using your excellent video to rebuild the t5 in my 83 cj7. I purchased a new 3rd gear for my year and model but the tooth count is 27 instead of 29 like my original. The outside diameter is .055" less than the original. Should I use this? When ordering, they don't tell you the tooth count. Can you advise me?
I just bought a Muncie 2 weeks ago off a friend for my 70’ Nova. When will your out of stock parts be back??
About to tackle one of these on a 67 mustang. Just a reseal tho. Look pretty easy. Thanks. 🤘🤘
You can do it!
thanks paul fascinating
Recently got my M21 reassembled, and boy what a fantastic help this video series and your 661 store have been. And i struggled a bit on things you made look easy, but it all did go very well. Had to replace more things than I'd planned on, even bought a small press to get the job done. One thing I ended up doing that made a difference, when dropping my main shaft in I kept having issues getting the keys in the hub to line up with the slots in the ring. I just couldn't see any of it once they got close. I ended up using a sharpie to make marks on the hub where the keys were, and on the brass ring where I could still see them once the shafts got close. Worked like a charm. Should be back in the car this week. Thanks again Paul :)
Hey Paul, love the videos. What am I missing? Every time I snug that center bolt on my GTO M20, the shifter becomes so snug. It’s hard to go be between all the gears. I have to loosen it up a little bit so I can shift smoothly, but eventually the bolt works its way out even with the lock washer and the flat washer? Am I missing a part? Or should I just snug it and use thread locker?
The shims may be too tight or the upper sleeve needs to be shimmed
Thank you Paul, for the beautiful m-22 box you built for me 4 years ago!! coupled with my 4;11 rear in my 71 nova, and my Mr Gasket v- gate, my youth has returned!! thanks again, shes flawless!
Try to fix my spdo gear on the main shaft it looks plastic and is way to far forward can I replace it without disabiliing the whole transmission
2 years ago i lost my gear box Audi 2.0 ,6 speed after fill the gear box with GL-5. That GL-5 destroyed all syncronized rings. Many auto parts sellers dont care about GL-3 OR GL-4 OR GL-5 but this is very important .
Great explanations mate! Cheers from Australia.
Hello thank you for your awesome videos! I have a question regarding gearbox oil and transmission fluids. Are they the same and can be used interchangeably for manual and automotive cars. My company is currently facing a dilemma if we should write transmission oil or gearbox oil. thank you very much.
Just specify the type of Lubricant. Example. My automatic takes Mercon Lube and my 4 speed takes 85-90w lube
Always a joy to watch you make a decent gearbox a perfect gearbox. Thanks for your tenacity to detail !
Does the top loader have different lengths of input shafts?
Yes big and small blocks have different length pilots
@@GearBoxVideothank you so much for your help! This explains why I’m having trouble. I went from a big block 352 to a 300 straight six. Do they make spacer plates? And where could I find them?
That is something that you are going to just have to mock up. Put the bellhousing on the engine with the trans and see where your shortcomings are. You may just have to extend the pilot bushing. There use to be a company that made an insert for the crankshaft that extended the pilot pushing when using short pilot inputs in different applications
@@GearBoxVideothank you so much for your help!
lots of great information thank you
I'm finishing up this project now. My biggest "lesson learned" is to buy retaining ring pliers, not snap ring pliers. I about broke my thumb nail off when using a big set of snap ring pliars. I found a cheap set of retaining ring pliers at advanced auto, Napa had a set too but harbor freight doesn't carry them at this time. Also, organizing the old snap rings to size the new ones up would have saved me considerable time.
Impressive description
Very informative. What disappoints me is why Hurst doesn’t address the weaknesses in their product.
It is what it is . Thats why always get a new shifter from me . Same cost but with all the mods!
@@GearBoxVideo I tried contacting you via email. Did not get a reply. If I need the Installation kit, I will be calling you. I’m hearing impaired, so I prefer texts and emails; but that’s my problem. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge in the videos.

hey paul i have a richmond 5 speed along with scnyros i have bad vibration 2nd and third gear 2nd gear at 4k bad vib 3rd gear some vib 4 th gear less 5th gear 0 does this sound like a bent shaft to u thanks matt
Congrats on 100k! Been watching you for years and love the content. Wish you’d make more!
The question arose where I could buy 2 gears, since mine was blown up
excellent video and explanation of the basics in a manual clutch system. well done Paul
Thank you!
I changed my bearing retainer I really appreciate your tips made it very easy for me I did need the thicker gasket thank you so much
Hi Paul I change that I use tremec t5 I have doubts if it is word class e or STD. Identification Box 13-52-065-922 identification label: (aluminum label screwed to the box) J3091 4408-3 204530 3205003

Nope. Try eBay

First off, amazing channel im glad i found it and you now have a new subscriber. My question is i have an 87 Thunderbird turbocoupe with the wc t5. Under high rpm and boost it grinds bad going from 2-3 enough to where i have to double clutch to avoid it. Im assumint synchro is shot? And or fork. I've rebuilt 3 speed autos years ago but have never torn into a manual. I am going to be doing it myself with your videos to guide me along. Does my symptom sound like its caused by what parts i mentioned? It does not grind at all under normal to medium acceleration. Thanks!
Yes probably the ring is shot. But you may also want to try and give yourself more clutch release. It's possible at the higher RPM that the clutch is dragging enough to cause a grind.
@@GearBoxVideo thank you I appreciate the advice! Again great channel keep it up!
BTW, love your videos!
so the locking or non-interlocking syncroteeth (brass syncro) take ALL the engine horsepower torque through those beefy gears? I thought the syncro teeth were there just to match up with the adjoining gear so that the sliding shift gear can ingage the wide span of the gear itself
Yes, all the clutch teeth are taking the full load of the torque. That is what connects the gear to the shaft. Certain cars I've actually seen those teeth shear on the high load.
@@GearBoxVideo That's incredible, yes amazing the syncro or as you properly say 'clutch teeth' can take these loads, amazing come to think of it. BTW LUUUUVVV your videos! I just wish you had more to show!! I've learned so much!!! Another UA-camr :'2vintage' say's his gear set on his Honda Quad, the gears keep slipping out of gear and into neutrol on it's own. And he's stumped looking at the gear set and can't find anything wrong with it when he's closely inspecting them. Please more videos!! 🙂🙂
oop's it's a Suzuki Quad, and not a Honda Quad. If you would like to quick look at his issue, his UA-cam handle is 'I Can't Fix This Rare 2-Stroke Race Quad' time; around 1:04. Sorry if i'm taking too much of your time. But you're the pro, maybe you have some ideas
Great vid!! Thank u!! Jus bought a 82 cj5, the forks r stuck, i took drain plate off and there was barely enough oil to lube teeth on gears, plus i found half of a very thin round metal shim or bearing seal. Cant find the other half, but, gears and everything looks great, despite the item. Magnetic drain plug had just a little bit of metal, minor, thoughts?
If you want, send a picture of the parts that you found to my email address. All the info is in the video description
Thank you
Hi I have a 1985 C4 with this Transmission. My question is to do with a comment you made in this video around the 6 minute mark I think the problem is to do with the bearing pushing the seal out of the housing causing the trans stuck in reverse gear (I haven't been able to get the car out of reverse the last time I had the car out for a drive) Do I have to drop the overdrive unit to get the shifter to get into neutral?. or do I need to drop the whole transmission to get the overdrive out for repair. Thank you and look forward to your reply. Cheers
First, see if you can get underneath the car and manually move the reverse shifter shaft back into neutral. If that doesn't work then you will have to drop the whole transmission you cannot slide the overdrive unit off of the back. Once the overdrive is off you can usually push in the roller bearing, stake it in place and install a new seal
Thanks Paul I will try that. I have another question ? Do you know what other transmission will bolt up to this car in place of the 4+3 , preferably something out of another car 5 sp with an overdrive. ?
Nothing, other than a later ZF 6 speed. Which has zero service parts
Great video and great product! I have had on in my t5 for the last 4 years now!
How can i buy one of your rebuild kits and your book?
Thank you, you can go to my website using the links in the video description and purchase them online.
Hi Paul, I'm here in Jupiter. I called you a couple of weeks ago about parts for a Tremec 3550. You referred me to a company and I got the parts. Thanks to this video I have the transmission rebuilt except for sealing it up. And of course I cleaned the case, all the parts and the debris magnet throughly! Do you still recommend anaerobic sealant for assembly? And, what transmission fluid do you recommend currently? Is Dexron VI ok???
hello awesome video! I have a situation and i need advice. I bought a 2015 mitsubishi mirage g4 manual and i had a mechanic do the transmission oil change and he said that the cars here in Panama use 80w90 but the manufacturer recommendation is 75w80, i found 75w80 but wasnt easy and had him change the gear oil but now the car is acting up, vibrated a lot on first gear going up a ramp at the mall hardly could make it up. was it the change from the thicker gear oil to the thinner oil that caused it?
Sounds like a clutch issue
I recently picked up an a833 Super Shifter 3, original box, all papers (stamped 1978) and it looks like a drag/toy car that someone put back to stock decades ago. Seems fine on the bench, but who knows until bolted up. Can these be effectively regreased without disassembly? Or do you need to take them down to clean and regrease between plates?
In my first shifter video I show how to disassemble the shifter for cleaning and greasing purposes. You need to really take the whole shifter apart. Especially because all the grease tends to dry up and get gummy
I believe you could explain just about anything. Pretty work.
Hi, the channel is incredible. I want to buy repair kit for Tremec T5 WC 13-52-065-922 (synchronized) It has an indication of an online store. I am from Brazil
We currently do not ship those because we are no longer doing international shipments
Paul addresses every detail and result is amazing. However, I'm curious if anything can be done to align gear mesh better?
There are some people that will rebar and bush the case and move the counter gear up to decrease backlash. This is good for racing applications to compensate for expansion. As far as gear alignment relative to the cluster gear on a Muncie the offsets are there for a purpose
Question for GearBoxVideo, first of all thank you for beautiful information, my girlfriend has a 21 yo diesel smart car with an automated manual gearbox that calls for atf dexron 3, since I think it was designed when modern low viscosity manual transmission fluids were not available would using one of the recent mtf with same viscosity as atf benefit the gearbox? Maybe helping syncro life or better gears lubrication? I'd like to hear your thoughts, thank you
There are some better quality oils designed to replace dexron that work great. Such as the synchromesh fluids offered by just about anyone now. You want to stick to the same viscosities because of the clearances in the box were designed to work with those types of viscosity fluids. Using a higher viscosity oil may cause lubrication issues
This video is awesome, thank you! I doubt I could have correctly reassembled my T176 without watching and listening to you explain. The instructions that came with my rebuild kit were nowhere near as detailed or thorough as your video(s).
Master Transmission builder. Great videos!
Thank you for responding, I finished the video and it leads me to believe I have a rod that slipped. My problem started when I was power shifting, so probably banged the gear to hard. Thanks again.
Thanks for this! After all the internet hype about GL-4 vs GL-5, I was left scratching my head. I ordered the Driven GL-4 for my Ford top loader.
